The Environmental Collective Housing Organisation (ECHO) Inc. is a Not for Profit organisation and a cornerstone of Canberra’s inner north, providing affordable and secure rental housing to individuals and families on low to moderate incomes. With a deep commitment to social inclusion, tenant empowerment, and environmental sustainability, ECHO is not just about providing a roof over people’s heads—it’s about building a thriving community.

Founded with the goal of creating affordable housing opportunities for “social contributors” such as community sector workers, artists, and sole parents. They play a vital role in ensuring individuals who contribute so much to the vibrancy of the local community have a safe and secure place to call home.

Currently, ECHO manages 35 properties across Canberra’s inner north. These properties offer secure, long-term rental options, providing tenants with peace of mind and financial stability. ECHO is set apart by its unique tenant-led governance model. A committee of tenants oversees the organisation, ensuring that the voices of those living in the properties are heard and prioritised. Alongside tenant members, independent committee members bring specialised skills that enhance the organisation’s governance and strategic direction.

The tenant-led model fosters a strong sense of community and ownership. Tenants are actively involved in decision-making processes, giving them a say in how their housing is managed. This approach not only empowers residents but also strengthens the fabric of the community, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued.

ECHO is more than just a housing provider, they recognise the unique challenges faced by low to moderate-income earners, striving to alleviate financial pressures by offering secure and affordable rental options. By doing so, ECHO plays a crucial role in supporting the wellbeing of its tenants, allowing them to focus on other aspects of their lives without the constant worry of housing instability.

Environmental sustainability is another key pillar of their operations. Aligning practices with social and environmental values ensures that housing solutions are not only affordable but sustainable for future generations. By fostering these values, they are helping to build stronger, more resilient communities that contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future for everyone.

ECHO recently entered into a new chapter when one of its original founders, Bhavana Moylan, retired from her role as Coordinator. Bhavana’s dedication and vision have left an indelible mark on the organisation and the community it serves. Her leadership helped shape ECHO into the inclusive, sustainable, and tenant-empowered organisation it is today. ECHO’s future is in good hands with Julie Monro-Allison stepping into the Coordinator role. Julie is committed to continuing the organisation’s mission, ensuring that ECHO remains a beacon of support and empowerment for its tenants. The team from ECHO extend their deepened thanks to Bhavana for her unwavering, continuing and much valued commitment to the organisation.

As ECHO moves forward, it remains dedicated to its mission of providing secure, affordable, and sustainable housing, while promoting social inclusion and tenant empowerment in Canberra’s inner north. Their ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to fostering vibrant, inclusive communities that prioritise both people and the environment.
